TikTok Privacy Settings: A Complete Walkthrough
TikTok's defaults favour reach, not privacy. If your account is for watching — or it belongs to a teenager — ten minutes in Profile → ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy changes the picture completely.
Account visibility
- Private account — the master switch: only approved followers see your videos. (Accounts for under-16s are private by default.)
- Suggest your account to others — turn off the contacts/Facebook/link-based suggestions so your account doesn't surface to people who merely have your number.
- Sync contacts — off, and remove previously synced contacts, unless you want to be findable.
Interactions
- Comments — Followers or Friends only; enable comment filtering for spam and offensive keywords.
- Duet & Stitch — controls whether others can build videos from yours; Friends-only prevents your clips being remixed by strangers.
- Direct messages — Friends only (DMs are unavailable to under-16 accounts entirely).
- Downloads — off, so your videos can't be saved with one tap (screen recording remains possible — nothing stops that).

- Ads personalisation — Settings → Privacy → Ads: switch off ads based on off-TikTok activity.
- Download your data — Settings → Account → Download your data shows what TikTok holds.
For parents: Family Pairing
Under Settings → Family Pairing, link your own TikTok to your child's: you then remotely control screen time, Restricted Mode, search, and who can message them — with changes locked from the child's side.

Went private but old videos still circulate? Anything downloaded or reposted before the switch is out of your control — going private only gates future access. Can't find a setting? TikTok reshuffles menus often; use the search bar at the top of Settings and privacy.

Does a private TikTok hide my profile completely?
No — username, photo and bio stay visible and searchable. Private mode protects your videos, followers list and likes.
Can people see who viewed their TikTok profile?
Only if both people have Profile View History enabled (Settings → Privacy → Profile views). With it off, your visits are invisible — and you can't see yours.
Is Restricted Mode the same as Family Pairing?
No. Restricted Mode is a content filter anyone can enable on their own app; Family Pairing gives a parent remote, PIN-protected control over a child's settings including Restricted Mode.
