Netflix Video Quality Settings: Fix Blurry Streaming
Blurry Netflix is almost always one of three things: a data-saving playback setting, a plan that doesn't include HD/4K, or a device/connection bottleneck. Check them in that order — the first two take under a minute.
Quick answer
On the Netflix website go to Account → Profiles → [your profile] → Playback settings and set data usage to High. This setting is per-profile and the "Auto" default can sit well below your screen's capability on slower connections.
Step 1: Set playback quality to High
- Sign in at netflix.com in a browser (the TV app doesn't expose this screen).
- Open Account → Profiles, expand your profile, and click Playback settings.
- Choose High and save. Repeat for each profile that streams on a TV.
Step 2: Check what your plan actually supports
Quality is capped by plan tier: the ad-supported and Standard plans top out at 1080p Full HD, while only Premium streams 4K Ultra HD and HDR. If you're paying for Standard and expecting 4K on a 4K TV, the plan is the bottleneck — no setting will fix it.
Step 3: Rule out the device and connection
- Bandwidth: 4K needs a steady ~15 Mbps per stream; HD needs ~5 Mbps. Run a speed test on the streaming device itself, not your phone.
- The title itself: not everything on Netflix exists in 4K. Look for the Ultra HD 4K badge on the title's page.
- HDMI: for 4K HDR, the streaming box must be on an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 (often labelled) with a High Speed cable.
- Browser users: Chrome and Firefox cap Netflix at 720p. Use the Windows app or Microsoft Edge for 1080p/4K on a PC.
Troubleshooting
Quality dips only in the evening? That's network congestion — try ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, or a 5 GHz band. Fixed everything and still soft? Sign out of the TV app and back in; the app caches the old playback setting until the session refreshes.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Netflix blurry only on my phone?
The mobile app has its own per-device data saver: in the app go to My Netflix → menu → App Settings → Video Quality and set Mobile Data Usage to Maximum (or use Wi-Fi).
Does the High setting use much more data?
Yes — up to ~7 GB/hour for 4K versus ~1 GB/hour on Save Data. On unlimited home broadband that's fine; on metered connections choose Auto.
My TV is 4K but Netflix never shows the 4K badge — why?
Usually the plan (only Premium includes Ultra HD) or the TV's Netflix app is outdated. Check the plan first, then update the TV firmware and app.
