Out of the box, most Samsung TVs ship in a bright, oversaturated shop-floor mode with motion smoothing on. Ten settings changes get you the picture the content was made for. Paths below: Settings → All Settings → Picture (menus vary slightly by year).

Quick answer

Set Picture Mode to Filmmaker Mode (or Movie if your set lacks it) for films and TV. It fixes colour temperature, disables motion smoothing and most processing in one move. Then raise Brightness to taste for your room.

The five sliders worth touching (Expert Settings)

  1. Brightness/Backlight — set for your room; higher for daytime, lower for dark-room movie nights.
  2. Contrast — 45–50 is usually right in Movie/Filmmaker; maxing it clips bright detail.
  3. Sharpness — 0–10. High sharpness adds halos, not detail; modern sources need almost none.
  4. Colour temperature — Warm2 looks orange for the first hour and correct forever after; it's the accurate setting.
  5. Picture Clarity (motion) — Off for films; Custom with low judder reduction for sport if you like smooth motion.

Turn these off

  • Dynamic Contrast / Contrast Enhancer — crushes shadows and blows highlights.
  • Ambient light / Eco brightness sensors (Settings → General → Power and Energy Saving) — if the picture randomly dims, this is why.
  • Digital Clean View — noise reduction that softens modern content.

Gaming

Plug consoles into the HDMI port that supports the TV's full features, enable Game Mode (Settings → General → External Device Manager), and on 120 Hz sets turn on ALLM/VRR there too — input lag drops to ~10 ms.

Troubleshooting

HDR looks dim? HDR modes have separate slider values — adjust while HDR content is playing. Settings greyed out? The Eco/Intelligent picture mode is overriding; disable Intelligent Mode. Sport looks like a soap opera? That's Picture Clarity — set judder/blur reduction to taste or off.

Is Filmmaker Mode too dark?

It targets a dim room. Keep the mode but raise Brightness/Backlight — that preserves the accurate colour while suiting a bright living room.

Do these settings apply to all inputs and apps?

Samsung stores picture settings per input, and HDR/SDR separately. Set your mode once for built-in apps and once per HDMI device, in both SDR and HDR content.

Should I calibrate professionally?

For most people, Filmmaker/Movie mode with Warm2 gets within a few percent of calibrated. Paid calibration is for enthusiasts with high-end panels and dark rooms.
