What are Read Receipts?

Read receipts are the ticks or "Seen" labels telling a sender you've viewed their message. Each app has its own switch, usually under privacy settings.

They're almost always reciprocal: turning yours off means you also stop seeing when others read your messages. WhatsApp's exception — read receipts always apply in group chats — catches many people out.
