What is IP Address?

An IP address identifies a device on a network. Your home has two kinds: one public address your ISP assigns to the whole household, and private addresses (usually 192.168.x.x) your router gives each device internally.

The router's own private address — commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 — is what you type into a browser to reach its settings page.
