What is Router Firmware?

Firmware is the operating system running on your router itself. Updates fix security holes, improve stability and occasionally add features — yet most routers never get updated by their owners.

Look for an Update or Firmware page in the router's admin panel; newer routers and mesh systems update automatically. An out-of-date router is one of the most commonly exploited devices in a home.
