What is Band Steering?

Band steering is the router feature that automatically nudges each device onto the best frequency band — 5 GHz when close and capable, 2.4 GHz at long range — under a single network name.

It's why modern routers show one Wi-Fi name instead of two. If a stubborn smart-home gadget only pairs on 2.4 GHz, most routers let you temporarily separate the bands or create an IoT network for setup.
