What is User Account Control?

User Account Control (UAC) is the dark-screen "Do you want to allow this app to make changes?" prompt. It stops software silently gaining administrator power over your PC.

Its sensitivity is adjustable (search Start for UAC), but don't disable it — that removes the one checkpoint between a malicious installer and full system control.
