What is Windows Registry?

The Registry is Windows' central settings database — thousands of keys controlling how the system and installed apps behave, including options no Settings page exposes.

It's edited with regedit, and carelessness can genuinely break Windows, so export a backup of any key before changing it. If a tutorial tells you to edit the Registry, make sure you trust the source first.
