What is Virtual Memory?

Virtual memory (the paging file) is disk space Windows uses as overflow when RAM fills up, moving inactive data out of memory so active apps keep running instead of crashing.

Windows manages its size well automatically. If you see "low on virtual memory" warnings, the real cures are closing memory-hungry apps or adding RAM — enlarging the paging file just trades crashes for slowness.
