What are Subtitles and Closed Captions?

Subtitles transcribe dialogue; closed captions (CC/SDH) also describe sounds — [door creaks], [tense music] — for viewers who can't hear them. Every streaming app has a per-title toggle, usually behind a speech-bubble icon.

Both iOS/Android and every major TV platform also offer system-wide caption style settings — size, font, background — that override the tiny defaults in most apps.
